Raheel Anwar (KFU, advisor F. Kappel): Mental Challenge supports Homeostasis in Cardiovascular System during Orthostatic stress

Abstract: A very important problem in cardiovascular modeling is the reaction of the cardiovascular system to orthostatic stress (head up tilt and/or lower body negative pressure), because the physiological control involves several control loops (baro-receptor loop, cardio pulmonary loop etc.) which are interacting in various ways. It has been found that mental challenge given to subject under orthostatic stress delays the syncope induced by shortfall of homeostasis in cardiovascular system in humans.
Mental challenge activates sympathetic nervous system which helps in sustaining homeostasis for the extended duration. We have extended the cardio-receptory model developed by F. Kappel et al., and results show that linear quadratic regulator can be used to find control sequence (heart rate, contractility, peripheral resistance, etc.) to regulate systemic pressure, which is primarily controlled state variable.  [hide abstract]
